Capturing Motion with Red Rock High School
May 2022
About the Painting
This piece was a collaborative project created by Red Rock High School, The Sedona Artists in the Classroom Program, and artist, Cannon Winkler.
The goal of the project was to capture motion and dance from six art classes at Red Rock High School. The large canvas was laid flat on the floor and each class had time to add a layer by moving on top of the canvas with paint on their hands and feet.
The students selected their own music and were encouraged to move freely and have fun. It was an experiment in capturing dance, joy, and celebration in paint. The project draws inspiration from the abstract painter, Jackson Pollock, and from the ancient handprint cave paintings as seen in Cueva de Las Manos, Argentina.
